Will this work with their phone?

During setup, we help set their phone to stay quiet for callers it doesn't recognize. Their carrier just needs to send those unanswered calls to us so we can call back. Most major carriers can do this.

This check is for their U.S. mobile phone (iPhone or Android). A landline works only in specific cases, so if they have one, contact us before signing up.

This check is for their U.S. mobile phone (iPhone or Android). A landline works only in specific cases, so if they have one, contact us first.

This is sometimes called conditional call forwarding: calls only get sent to us when your parent doesn't answer.

What you'll see

One of three honest answers, each with one next step.

Good news — this should work.

Their phone and carrier support what's needed.

Then continue to plans.

Then set up their phone.

Almost — call their carrier to confirm conditional call forwarding.

Call the carrier and ask them to confirm the line supports conditional call forwarding: sending calls to another number only when they go unanswered. We'll give you that number when you set up.

Come back here once they confirm.

This carrier isn't supported for this kind of call forwarding.

Some carriers don't offer it.

Talk to us about other options

Carriers can change their own settings, so recheck here if something stops working later.

Screening can make mistakes. Protect & Assist is not an emergency service. For emergencies, call 911 directly.

Technical details: the written setup steps, the test calls, and the carrier and phone tables

Full setup instructions

1. Check the phone and carrier first

Protect & Assist requires carrier conditional forwarding for all three cases the network knows: a call the phone does not answer, a call it declines (busy), and a call it cannot take (not reachable: the phone off or out of signal range). Cricket is incompatible with this setup. Visible and Verizon support the required type, but it still must be configured and tested on the actual line. Other carriers need confirmation for their exact plan. A saved setting alone is not proof of compatibility: the test calls are.

2. Keep the two numbers straight

Their own mobile number belongs to your loved one. The Protect & Assist number receives calls forwarded by the carrier. Protect & Assist then calls their own mobile number back. Never forward all calls from that mobile number to Protect & Assist: the callback must have a route to the person.

3. Let trusted calls and Protect & Assist's call back ring

Save the Protect & Assist number as a contact on their phone, along with the family, clinicians, and other people they want to hear from. Add Protect & Assist and those contacts to the phone’s allowed callers. Keep the phone nearby and obtain their permission.

4. Silence unknown callers on the phone

On an Android phone with the Protect & Assist app connected, the app does this step and the next one for you: its call protection declines unknown callers before the phone rings, and its last screen turns on call forwarding; without the app, set them by hand as below. On an iPhone: Live Voicemail OFF, Screen Unknown Callers set to Silence (older iOS: Silence Unknown Callers ON), the Call Forwarding switch OFF, and Do Not Disturb allowing calls from Contacts Only with Allow Repeated Calls OFF. On Android: Do Not Disturb on all the time, Calls from Contacts only, Allow repeat callers OFF, the phone's own Always forward off, and nothing that answers calls for you (Pixel Call Screen, Samsung Bixby Text Call). A call the phone answers itself is never forwarded. Caller silencing by itself does not forward anything; the carrier does.

5. Enable conditional forwarding with the carrier

Set the carrier's conditional forwarding for busy, no-answer and not-reachable calls to the Protect & Assist number. On T-Mobile, Mint and AT&T's network, one code sets all three: **004*1 plus the 10-digit screening number, then # (##004# turns it off); if a phone will not take it, **61*, **67* and **62* set them one at a time. On Verizon's network, *71 plus the 10-digit number covers busy and no-answer (*73 turns it off); the optional call with the phone off (or in Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi OFF) checks the not-reachable case. Do not choose Always forward, Forward all, *72, **21* or the iPhone Call Forwarding switch. Prefer not to dial codes? Contact the carrier through its official support (a store only if it offers one; Visible uses app/website chat and has no stores or phone support) and ask for conditional call forwarding, for busy, no-answer and not-reachable calls, from this mobile number to the Protect & Assist number, never 'forward all calls'. Then make the test calls. Keep the provider's deactivation and voicemail-restore instructions.

6. Test the complete call path

Check trusted calls, the unknown call with the quiet setting on, and Protect & Assist's call back with yes/no approval. A call with the phone off (or in Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi OFF) is optional. Also check what happens if the return call is not answered. A screenshot, a 'settings successful' message after a code, or a saved number does not prove the route works: our own test on a T-Mobile iPhone accepted the code and still sent Do Not Disturb calls to voicemail until the not-reachable forward was set. Finish only after the actual calls pass.

Required call tests

  • A trusted call rings normallyCall their own mobile number from a saved, allowed contact. The phone should ring, and the person should be able to answer directly.
  • An unknown call stays quiet and reaches Protect & AssistWith their phone's protection on (the Protect & Assist app's call protection on, or the phone's everyday quiet setting ON), call its mobile number from a number not saved in its contacts. Do not touch their phone. It should stay quiet, and Protect & Assist should answer. On a basic or flip phone, which can't keep unknown callers quiet, let it ring without answering: after a few rings, Protect & Assist should answer.
  • An unreachable phone forwards to Protect & Assist (optional)Turn their phone fully off, or turn on Airplane Mode and turn Wi-Fi OFF too, so Wi-Fi Calling cannot receive the call. Call its mobile number from another phone: Protect & Assist should answer. Hang up, then turn Airplane Mode OFF (or power the phone on), restore Wi-Fi and wait for service before testing the callback.
  • Protect & Assist's call back rings and connectsDuring that screening test, answer Protect & Assist's call back, listen to the caller introduction, and say yes. Confirm both people can talk and that the call does not forward back into Protect & Assist.
  • Decline and unanswered behavior is checkedRepeat the test and say no. Then check the carrier/voicemail behavior when the callback is unanswered. If calls loop, never arrive, or reach an unexpected voicemail, stop and get support.

Carrier compatibility

Reviewed 2026-10-30. “Documented” means the provider publishes the forwarding type; it does not mean a real Protect & Assist test call has been performed on your line. “Confirm” means support is not established for every applicable plan. Protect & Assist operational exclusions are identified separately.

Actual carrier Protect & Assist setup status Evidence and next step
Verizon Supported type; confirm and test this line Provider-documented no-answer forwarding

Verizon documents *71 plus the 10-digit destination for unanswered calls. Use their mobile line, not a landline/One Talk guide. Confirm voicemail behavior and test Protect & Assist's call back.

Busy and no-answer pattern: *71[10-digit Protect & Assist number]. Disable: *73. This code documents busy and no-answer forwarding. Test unreachable forwarding with the phone off or Airplane Mode and Wi-Fi OFF; if that fails, ask the carrier whether it can add that condition. Restore connectivity before callback tests.

Visible Supported type; confirm and test this line Visible runs on the Verizon network; Protect & Assist tested Verizon's *71 / *73 codes on a Visible line on Sept 13, 2026: unanswered calls were forwarded

Visible uses Verizon's network codes: *71 plus the 10-digit destination forwards busy and unanswered calls; *73 turns it off. Test Protect & Assist's call back after enabling.

We tested it ourselves on a Visible line (an Android phone), Sept 13, 2026: unanswered calls reached Protect & Assist.

Phone-brand instructions

These are documented starting points, not a guarantee for every model. Select the actual phone and installed OS. A compatible carrier is still required.

Apple iPhone — Focus-capable iPhones; verify installed iOS

Manufacturer-documented allowed people/call groups

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Phone (on older iOS, Settings > Phone) and turn Live Voicemail OFF. With it on, the iPhone answers unanswered calls itself and records them, so the carrier never forwards them.
  2. On the same screen, open Screen Unknown Callers and choose Silence. (On iOS 18 and older it is a switch, Silence Unknown Callers: turn it ON.) Unknown numbers then don't ring the phone and go to the carrier. Never choose Ask Reason for Calling (the phone answers the call), and not Never (strangers ring the phone).
  3. On the same screen, open Call Forwarding and make sure that switch is OFF. That switch sends every call away, including our call back. The carrier code that comes next is different: it forwards only the calls the phone doesn't take.
  4. Save the Protect & Assist number in Contacts as "Protect & Assist", and the family and friends who should ring. Saved contacts ring; recent numbers they called may ring too.
  5. For a second layer, turn on Do Not Disturb and leave it on: Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb > People > Allow Calls From: Contacts Only (or Favorites), and turn OFF Allow Repeated Calls, or a stranger calling twice rings through.

Then dial the carrier's codes below. The settings' names differ a little by iOS version; the switches are the same.

Where it is, by software version

  • iOS 26: Settings > Apps > Phone: Screen Unknown Callers = Silence; Live Voicemail off; Call Forwarding off. Do Not Disturb: Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb > People > Allow Calls From: Contacts Only; Allow Repeated Calls off.
  • iOS 18: Settings > Apps > Phone: Silence Unknown Callers ON; Live Voicemail off; Call Forwarding off. Do Not Disturb: Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb > People > Allow Calls From: Contacts Only; Allow Repeated Calls off.
  • iOS 17: Settings > Phone: Silence Unknown Callers ON; Live Voicemail off (new in iOS 17, on by default in the US); Call Forwarding off. Do Not Disturb: Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb > People.
  • iOS 15 and 16: Settings > Phone: Silence Unknown Callers ON; Call Forwarding off. No Live Voicemail on these versions. Do Not Disturb: Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb > People > Allow Calls From: Contacts Only (or Favorites); Allow Repeated Calls off.
  • iOS 13 and 14: Settings > Phone: Silence Unknown Callers ON; Call Forwarding off. Do Not Disturb: Settings > Do Not Disturb > Allow Calls From: All Contacts (or Favorites); Repeated Calls off; turn Do Not Disturb on all the time.
  • iOS 12 and older: No Silence Unknown Callers. Use Do Not Disturb: Settings > Do Not Disturb > on, Allow Calls From: All Contacts (or Favorites), Repeated Calls off; Settings > Phone > Call Forwarding off.

Samsung Galaxy — Current Galaxy/One UI guidance; older One UI varies

Manufacturer-documented caller exceptions

  1. Save the Protect & Assist number in Contacts as "Protect & Assist", and the family and friends who should ring.
  2. Turn on Do Not Disturb and leave it on all the time, with no schedule (Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb). In it, open Allowed during Do not disturb > Calls and messages, and set Calls to Contacts only (or Favorites, with Protect & Assist a favorite), and turn OFF Allow repeat callers, or a stranger who calls twice rings through. To keep those calls off the screen too, turn on its options that hide notifications (no pop-ups, don't turn on the screen), if the phone has them. Protect & Assist and your contacts ring; everyone else is silent and goes to the carrier.
  3. In the Phone app, open its menu > Settings: make sure Call forwarding (Always forward) is off, and turn OFF Bixby Text Call and any call assist that answers calls for you. A call the phone answers or forwards itself never reaches Protect & Assist.

Menu names differ a little by One UI version: search Settings for a menu's name if the path differs. Then dial the carrier's codes below. Never choose None or Everyone for calls.

Where it is, by software version

  • One UI 6, 7 and 8 (Android 14 to 16): Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb > Allowed during Do not disturb > Calls and messages > Calls: Contacts only; Repeat callers off. Phone app > menu > Settings: Bixby Text Call off; Supplementary services > Call forwarding: Always forward off.
  • One UI 3, 4 and 5 (Android 11 to 13): Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb > Allow exceptions (or Calls, messages, and conversations) > Calls: Contacts only; Repeat callers off. Phone app > menu > Settings > Supplementary services > Call forwarding: Always forward off. Bixby Text Call exists from One UI 5.1: turn it off.
  • One UI 1 and 2 (Android 9 and 10): Settings > Sounds and vibration (or Notifications) > Do not disturb > Allow exceptions > Calls from: Contacts only; Repeat callers off. Phone app > menu > Settings > Supplementary services > Call forwarding: Always forward off.
  • Android 8 and older Galaxy phones: Settings > Sounds and vibration > Do not disturb > Allow exceptions > Custom > Calls from: Contacts only; Repeated callers off. Phone app > More > Settings > More settings > Call forwarding: Always forward off.

Google Pixel — Current Modes UI; older Android menus differ

Google-documented Modes and People filters

  1. Save the Protect & Assist number in Contacts as "Protect & Assist", and the family and friends who should ring.
  2. Turn on Do Not Disturb and leave it on all the time, with no schedule (Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb; older Android: Settings > Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb). In it, open Notification filters > People > Calls (older Android: People > Calls) and set it to Contacts (or Starred contacts, with Protect & Assist starred), and turn OFF Allow repeat callers, or a stranger who calls twice rings through. To keep those calls off the screen too, open More settings > Display settings > Display options for filtered notifications and turn on Don't turn on screen, Don't wake for notifications, Don't pop notifications on screen and Hide from pull-down shade (older Android: Display options for hidden notifications > No visuals or sound from notifications). Protect & Assist and your contacts ring; everyone else is silent and goes to the carrier.
  3. In the Phone app, on its Home tab, tap More (⋮) > Settings > Spam and Call Screen (or Call Screen) > Call Screen and turn Automatically screen calls OFF (Pixel 6 and older: under Unknown call settings, choose Ring phone for each kind of caller). Call Screen answers calls itself, so the carrier never forwards them. Then make sure Call forwarding (Always forward) is off: Settings > Calls > Call forwarding. If that menu shows an error or isn't there, skip it: the carrier's code does the forwarding.

Menu names differ a little by Android version. Searching Settings finds Do Not Disturb; Call Screen and Call forwarding are in the Phone app's own settings (its Home tab > ⋮ > Settings), not in Settings. Then dial the carrier's codes below.

Common setup questions

What makes a phone compatible?

The phone must support the needed caller-silencing/allowed-contact settings, and its mobile line must support carrier conditional no-answer forwarding to the Protect & Assist number (an outside number). Cricket is not compatible. Visible and Verizon have compatible forwarding types; configure and test the actual line. Other providers and prepaid/MVNO plans require their own confirmation.

Why conditional forwarding?

Conditional forwarding sends a call onward only when a condition applies, such as no answer. The phone silences unknown callers so the carrier can forward the unanswered call. Standard forwarding sends every call away, including Protect & Assist's call back, so it cannot be substituted.

What is different on iPhone?

Do not enable the standard iPhone Call Forwarding switch for this workflow. Ask the carrier for conditional no-answer forwarding. On the phone, save Protect & Assist as a contact and allow it plus your chosen trusted contacts in Focus/Do Not Disturb. Confirm the exact menus on that iPhone and run the call tests.

What is different on Android?

On Android 10 or newer, the Protect & Assist app does the phone’s part. Install it from Google Play, connect it with a code from guided setup, and press Turn on call protection: it turns unknown callers away before the phone rings, and its last screen turns on call forwarding. Then save Protect & Assist as a contact and make the test calls.

Without the app, use the phone’s Do Not Disturb with caller exceptions to allow Protect & Assist and trusted contacts while silencing unknown callers, then dial the carrier’s code. Some Android Phone apps show Forward when unanswered under Call settings or Supplementary services; use it only when the carrier supports it. Never use Always forward.

Why does Protect & Assist's call back not ring?

Protect & Assist calls their own mobile number after collecting caller details. Its number must be saved and allowed to ring. If that callback is silenced or all calls are forwarded, it can return to Protect & Assist instead of reaching the person. Stop setup if there is a loop; check the allowlist and ask the carrier to review conditional forwarding.

What happens to voicemail?

Changing conditional forwarding can replace the carrier’s normal voicemail route. Before enabling it, get the carrier’s restore/deactivation steps. Then test unanswered calls and unanswered calls back from Protect & Assist. Do not assume a forwarded call will always land in a particular voicemail box.

How do I test the route?

A trusted call rings normally: Call their own mobile number from a saved, allowed contact. The phone should ring, and the person should be able to answer directly.

An unknown call stays quiet and reaches Protect & Assist: With their phone's protection on (the Protect & Assist app's call protection on, or the phone's everyday quiet setting ON), call its mobile number from a number not saved in its contacts. Do not touch their phone. It should stay quiet, and Protect & Assist should answer. On a basic or flip phone, which can't keep unknown callers quiet, let it ring without answering: after a few rings, Protect & Assist should answer.

An unreachable phone forwards to Protect & Assist (optional): Turn their phone fully off, or turn on Airplane Mode and turn Wi-Fi OFF too, so Wi-Fi Calling cannot receive the call. Call its mobile number from another phone: Protect & Assist should answer. Hang up, then turn Airplane Mode OFF (or power the phone on), restore Wi-Fi and wait for service before testing the callback.

Protect & Assist's call back rings and connects: During that screening test, answer Protect & Assist's call back, listen to the caller introduction, and say yes. Confirm both people can talk and that the call does not forward back into Protect & Assist.

Decline and unanswered behavior is checked: Repeat the test and say no. Then check the carrier/voicemail behavior when the callback is unanswered. If calls loop, never arrive, or reach an unexpected voicemail, stop and get support.

What if the carrier cannot support it?

Stop the phone setup if conditional no-answer forwarding is unsupported or unconfirmed. Do not substitute standard forwarding. Cricket is incompatible with this Protect & Assist setup; a compatible line/carrier is required.

When is setup complete?

Compatibility confirmation, saved settings, and completed menu steps are not enough. The quiet-mode and Protect & Assist call-back checks must actually pass before setup is marked complete, plus the trusted-call and decline/unanswered checks on a phone without the Protect & Assist app. The unreachable-phone check is optional.

Still stuck?Use the onboarding assistant with your actual phone model, OS, carrier and current step. Do not try unrelated activation codes or claim a test passed if the expected call did not arrive.
